這是開始做年度紀錄的第五年。

這年有自覺地專注在要有自覺地過生活。嘗試只在確定自己想要用手機時用,而不是因為感到無聊的習慣動作或是被通知的觸發。嘗試只在自己真正想要去一個聚會的時候去,而不是因為錯失恐懼 (FOMO)。嘗試察覺自己做每件事情的動機,避免只因為外在動機而不是內在動機影響的決定。

也嘗試把所有事情都不當成理所當然。吃飯前要認真感恩自己能吃到的每頓溫飽,即使是受到最小的忙也要有意識這不是理所當然。即使有時候可能會顯得唐突,還是要強迫自己跨過一個檻說謝謝,跨過一個檻誠實說出別人讓自己欣賞的事,跨過一個檻表達自己的歉意。

這年看了 24 部電影,新看的電影裡最喜歡《東京教父》、《靈魂急轉彎》、《婚姻故事》、《寂寞公路》,重看了《真愛每一天》、《全面啟動》、《愛在》三部曲、《曼哈頓練習曲》。完整的清單在 Instagram,也感謝 COVID 這年用了各種方式在各種地方看了電影,躺在地上看天花板、在車上看露天電影院、在人行道上看牆壁。

多謝當兵有了很多時間可以看書。這年最喜歡的書是《反脆弱》(Antifragile),身為 Taleb 哲學的信徒看了 700 頁的中文翻譯後馬上又看了一遍英文版過乾癮。當兵時喜歡的書有 Hackers and Painters、《大腦解密手冊》、《原子習慣》、《雪國》、《1984》,感謝眾弟兄以書會友。也看了一直被推薦的《國家為什麼會失敗》、《槍炮、病菌與鋼鐵》、《原則》,但沒有特別喜歡,也許需要在未來重新閱讀看看。退伍後也多虧了 Kindle 和 Audible 還是有蠻多機會看書,喜歡的書有 The Art of Learning、Your Music and People、The Undoing Project、《生命不可承受之輕》、《別鬧了費曼先生》、Tribe of Mentors。

這年有印象中最常聽的音樂是椅子樂團(專輯:Real Love Is…)、Damien Rice、Nujabes、dsktkg、草東沒有派對、透明雜誌、國蛋、LCD Sound System(專輯:Sound of Silver)、Mild Orange(專輯:Mild Orange)。多虧了當兵還有 COVID 沒有聽到任何一場現場。

終於大學畢業了。

去成功嶺當了一個多月的兵,後來自願分發去到了馬祖兩個月。感謝在兩地遇到的所有弟兄,很慶幸能遇到一群人讓我在當兵的時候認真很享受每一天的生活(即使嘴上還是不免俗每天要幹個幾句)。在馬祖打工換宿是無價的體驗,每天都在看著海配著書、弟兄幹話、健身、目睹一件又一件光怪陸離的扯事、從三個不同的人身上學了三個人各自喜歡的哲學家(維根斯坦、康德、奧理略)、在刺鳥咖啡廳辦了一場表演,族繁不及備載。很喜歡當兵時遇到的這群可愛的人們。

研究所申請的結果隨著當兵的進程揭曉。從成功嶺放假搭高鐵回家的早上聽著透明雜誌的九月教室收到 CMU 的錄取,頓時鬆了一大口氣。在馬祖一個槍枝保養完後的手機時間收到 Cornell Tech 的錄取跟獎學金,馬上尿遁跟班長說要上廁所藉故在集合場大吼了一聲,謝天謝地沒被長官罵,也感謝弟兄忍受我突然發瘋。

趁退伍跟出發去美國中間的空擋終於去上了平面設計課,感謝 Kelvin 的推薦。雖然實作的美感應該還是沒什麼長進,但每個禮拜兩天可以學習欣賞各種大師的作品還有各種基礎觀念也是很好玩,每每看到 Braulio Amado、杉本博司 (Hiroshi Sugimoto)、Aapo Huhta、上西祐理 (Yuri Uenishi)、Franco Grignani 的作品都還是會驚嘆不已。也順便因為平面設計課去看了 Henri Cartier-Bresson 還有黃華成的展覽,雖然很多脈絡還是沒能夠記牢,但總算是能再多理解一點點作品裡的想法。

在宜蘭管院盃打了大抵是穿著台大財金球衣的最後一個盃賽,但前一天在大溪露營夜半看海當天早上又跑去雙獅衝浪真的是讓人意識到要服老。只對學弟打了一場好球,後面比賽全數烙賽。但能跟熟悉的隊友們一起打球真的是很幸福。御天盃也是在被高粱擊倒的隔天被送下去,宿醉打球的感覺真的是提醒我們要好好保養身體。還好下半年來美國之後有了很多機會可以打球,希望能在美國快點找到可以保持強度的五打五比賽。

這年寫了八篇文章,一篇技術類的教學,一篇實習的回顧,兩篇跟研究所申請有關,兩篇 2019 的紀錄,一本看書的心得,但自己最滿意的應該還是 Let Go of Your Desire to Tell a Bigger Story When Listening。Medium 觀看數累積到了百萬,但主要還都是吃之前寫中文技術文章的老本,接下來還是要好好練習英文寫作還有練習寫非技術類的文章。

去綠島學了自由潛水,結果卡在平壓殘念,在上課之前真的要先好好練習不要天真以為自己會天生神力,不知道什麼時候還有機會再來挑戰了。

去綠島前又故技重施在台東找陌生人家的後院借宿露營,後來也順便在綠島獨自露營了三天。年初跟俊豪明宏去了宜蘭來來溫泉露營,夏天又加入劭恩一起去大溪蜜月灣。露營真的好爽。

買了機票後認真要跟台灣說再見。雖然也知道未來總是會充滿變數,但目前的計畫是中短期可能不會主要在台灣生活。台灣真的很棒也太多讓人捨不得的人事物。離開前很努力的見了朋友們,像明宏說的相逢即是有緣,希望大家過得好。

到了 NYC 生活,還是跟 2019 年來的印象一樣美好。雖然因為 COVID 出門的機會變得很少,但也多虧了 COVID 這座城市變得沒那麼擁擠。漫無目的地漫步在街上一次就是好幾個小時,書店、街景、博物館,因為一個城市的街景拋棄 CMU 真的是很值得的。

能夠到 Cornell Tech 唸書,再次要感謝太多太多人的幫忙。跟預期一樣適合我的學校,這裡的人們與生活有時候真的會讓人覺得太好,而有時會無法控制地暫時解離去想多年後回頭看這時的生活不知道會有多懷念。Roosevelt Island 上的 The House at Cornell Tech 是我住過最特別的地方,特別是當你學校的所有好朋友都住在同一棟大樓裡面。

來到美國生活,成長痛還是來自明確地感受到語言上的不舒適。即使知道使用英文作為第二語言的我們應該要先肯定自己,但在說寫時每次感受到自己所表達的與想表達的之間的落差還是會不舒服,看英文聽英文都還是比中文慢太多。也時常在想人如何在不同語言裡保持一致的人格(也許不同語言之間的個性差距只能縮小但不能完全抹平)。學習煮飯,學習買菜,學習幫自己剪頭髮,學習適應天氣跟日照,學習別人的文化,學習適應別人的文化,學習在適應別人的文化時融入自己的文化,學習跟一個新的城市有更多的連結。

運氣很好地在十月就找到了實習還能夠有所選擇,感謝太多 cold email、cold message 都受到很溫暖友善的幫助,Cornell Tech 朋朋們的各種幫忙,各種陌生人不只願意幫忙還願意約時間回答我各種問題。有時候覺得這個世界的一個很少人知道的秘密是:只要願意主動尋求幫忙或建議,大部分人都比我們想的還願意幫忙。雖然已經做了無數次但每次跟網路上的陌生人聊天訪談都還是會因為別人的友善感到有夠幸福,來這裡最大的感受總是 I’m such a lucky dude。

學習跟人們說再見,暫時的、永遠的、有意識地說再見又或是無意識地走到了岔路口。也許是真的很難但我們永遠要學習去慶祝一個人的離開。

看了聽了更多關於哲學、心理學。多虧了 MasterClass 佛心學生價上了 Malcom Gladwell 的寫作課。也感謝身邊的朋友們總是願意推薦我或跟我分享各種有趣的書、Podcast、文章、想法等等。

學習愛與學習呼吸,覺得三件人與人之間很重要的事情是擁抱、打電話、寫卡片。開始寫日記之後發現自己可以每一天都活兩遍。

2021 年正式過完一半才把 2020 的回顧寫完,但考量去年也是在年中才交件所以可能也可以將就當作是個傳統。2020 是到新環境的一年。充滿回憶的地方總是家。離開家需要理由,但回家不需要。每次出發都是為了再回台灣。
